International Day of People with Disability 2026: Inclusive Ideas for Workplaces and Communities

In short: International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is on Thursday 3 December 2026. It celebrates the contributions of people with disability and asks everyone to help build a more inclusive, accessible community. Below are practical ideas for workplaces, schools and community groups, plus simple guidance on language and accessibility.

What is International Day of People with Disability?

The United Nations proclaimed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 1992, and it has been held on 3 December each year since. In Australia, the day is known as International Day of People with Disability, or IDPwD, and the Australian Government supports a national program of events and resources. Each year has a theme, which is published on the official IDPwD website.

Disability is part of everyday life in Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, about one in five Australians, or around 5.5 million people, have disability. Many disabilities are not visible.

Ideas for workplaces

  • Invite a speaker with lived experience. Pay them for their time and let them set the topic.
  • Review accessibility. Walk your office, website and recruitment process with fresh eyes, or ask an accessibility consultant to do it with you.
  • Look at your hiring practices. Offer adjustments at every stage of recruitment and say so in job ads.
  • Make events accessible by default. Step-free venues, captions on videos, quiet spaces and clear information sent in advance.
  • Support an employee network. If staff want to start one, give it time, budget and a senior sponsor.
  • Register your event. Events can be registered on the IDPwD website, which helps others find and join them.

Ideas for schools and community groups

  • Share stories and achievements of people with disability, told in their own words.
  • Run an inclusive sports or games session designed so everyone can take part.
  • Invite a local disability organisation to talk about their work.
  • Check how accessible your regular events are, and make one change.

Making wellness spaces accessible

Wellness should be available to everyone. We work with NDIS participants and try to make our studio a welcoming, safe space for people of all abilities:

  • Small group classes, limited to a maximum of 10 people.
  • Tailored 1:1 programs built around each person's goals.
  • Carers and support workers are welcome to join classes, and extra assistance can be arranged.
  • A free consultation so we can understand your needs before you begin.
  • NDIS-friendly invoicing to make funding simple.

You can learn more about our NDIS services, or read our guide to NDIS and workplace wellness for employers.

Language and etiquette basics

  • Ask, do not assume. Some people prefer person-first language ("a person with disability") and others prefer identity-first language ("a disabled person"). Follow the lead of the person you are talking to.
  • Speak directly to the person, not to their support worker or interpreter.
  • Offer help, then wait. Ask if someone would like assistance and how, rather than stepping in.
  • Avoid pity or "inspiration" framing. People with disability are not there to inspire others.
