Look around any busy restaurant and you will see it: couples sitting across from each other, both lit by the glow of a phone. We have never been more connected, or more distracted from the person right in front of us. Mindful dating is a simple answer to that.
Quick answer: mindful dating means choosing presence over distraction on a date: phones away, a slower pace, one new experience and better questions. At Mirosuna in South Melbourne, A Mindful Date is a guided two-hour experience built around exactly that.
What is mindful dating?
Mindful dating is choosing presence over distraction when you spend time with your partner. It means doing things that ask you to put your phone away, slow down and notice each other, rather than filling time side by side. It is the shift from passive (watching something together) to active (sharing something together).
Five ways to make any date more mindful
- Phones away, properly. In a bag or another room, not face down on the table.
- Do one new thing. Novelty wakes up attention. Try a new suburb, a new cuisine or a new activity.
- Slow the pace. Walk instead of drive, linger instead of rush, leave space in the evening.
- Ask better questions. Swap "How was your day?" for "What was the best part of your day?" Our questions to ask your partner has 100 more.
- End with appreciation. Before you head home, each name one thing you noticed and loved about the other that day.
A 5-minute couples meditation to try
- Sit facing each other, close enough for your knees to touch.
- Close your eyes and breathe slowly for one minute.
- Open your eyes and look at each other, without speaking, for one minute. It may feel funny. Let it.
- Close your eyes again and breathe together, matching each other's pace, for two minutes.
- Open your eyes and each share one word for how you feel.
For a longer guided practice at home, try one of our guided meditations, such as the Tibetan Singing Bowl Sound Meditation.
What happens on A Mindful Date at Mirosuna

If you would prefer a quieter date focused on rest, our private couples sound meditation (1.5 hours, $385) lets you lie side by side as crystal singing bowls calm the nervous system.
Is a mindful date right for you?
It suits couples who feel stuck in routine, couples who want to celebrate in a more meaningful way, and couples who simply want to feel closer. It is not therapy and it is not a performance. If you are working through deeper relationship difficulties, a couples counsellor is the right first step. Our guide on how to reconnect with your partner has more.
