New Year Intentions Instead of Resolutions: A Gentler Way to Start 2027

Every January, millions of people make New Year's resolutions, and by February many of them have quietly given up. That is not a failure of willpower. Resolutions are often framed as rules to obey or problems to fix, which makes them easy to break and hard to love. An intention works differently. It is a direction you choose to move in, not a test you can fail. Here is how to set a New Year intention for 2027, with 20 ideas and a short meditation to help.

Why most New Year's resolutions fade

  • They are all or nothing. Miss one day of a resolution and it feels broken.
  • They focus on what to stop. Research on New Year's resolutions has found that goals framed around doing something new tend to succeed more often than goals framed around avoiding something.
  • They are too big. A vague goal like "get healthy" gives you nowhere to start on a Monday morning.
  • They are disconnected from why. Without a reason that matters to you, motivation runs out.

Intentions vs resolutions: what is the difference?

How to set a New Year intention, step by step

  1. Reflect on the year. What gave you energy in 2026? What drained it? What do you want more of?
  2. Choose a word or short phrase. "Slow down." "Presence." "Say yes." Keep it simple enough to remember in a busy moment.
  3. Write it down. Put it somewhere you will see it every day, such as a journal, a note on your mirror or your phone's lock screen.
  4. Attach it to a daily cue. Link your intention to something you already do, like your first coffee or the walk to the car.
  5. Take one small action. Ask yourself each morning, "What is one thing I can do today that fits my intention?"
  6. Return without judgement. When you drift, notice and come back. That is the practice.

A short intention-setting meditation

  1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
  2. Take five slow breaths, letting each exhale be a little longer than the inhale.
  3. Think back over the year. Let one moment you are grateful for come to mind.
  4. Ask yourself quietly, "How do I want to feel in the year ahead?" Wait for a word to arrive.
  5. Repeat that word silently with each breath for a minute.
  6. Open your eyes and write it down straight away.

  • Build it into a practice. A regular class gives your intention a weekly home. Our introductory offer is two weeks of unlimited classes for $69.
